From 10 April to 13 April, the Department of Florida Spring Conference was held here at the Best Western Gateway Grand. Being the third year in a row, the hotel had our event covered very well.
The conference had the usual events, including a good turnout for the Professional Development Program. The Hospitality Room was enjoyed by many.
The members and guests came from all over the State of Florida, and a few of our guests were from out of state. As everyone mingled, it was clear that these people understood they were part of a bigger family. The conversations were had regardless of how old you were or where you came from.
Our Guest of Honor, Lin Williams (Col, Ret, USMC) gave a good talk to explain to our non-Marine guests how we were made into Marines and why it is that we all have the warrior ethos. His talk brought back memories of the rigorous training and the sense of pride we all felt upon completing our training. He explained that the person you become serves you well with your Marine team as well as for the rest of your life in all you do.
The Conference concluded after a formal banquet on Saturday night - well, for some it was after some continued celebrating together in the Hospitality room. But as I left as it wrapped up, I felt that those who worked this event did a great job.
Kudos to Jim Hutto who, as usual, did an outstanding job as liaison to the hotel and in charge of all the details. Commandant Matt Yakubsin secured the generosity (and products) of the High Springs Brewing Company to anchor our hospitality suite. There were a handful of rock-steady volunteers. I won't try to name them as I might leave someone out. But you know who you are. Thanks to all who made the weekend possible.
