GATOR DETACHMENT 990 - MARINE CORPS LEAGUE - GAINESVILLE/ALACHUA |
2020 - MATT YAKUBSINMarine Matt Yakubsin was selected as the 2020 Marine of the Year. The year 2020 was difficult for all League units throughout the nation. In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, it was apparent that the 2020 Birthday Ball would be cancelled. However, in the spirit of "every clime and place," Marine Yakubsin developed an outdoor event at a local brewery (how perfect!) where guests could remain in open air and where a ceremony could be conducted. After many months of no meetings, the detachment had an event at which they could celebrate together. It was a tremendous success. Matt had arranged for the venue, the band, the catering and also worked in a fundraiser at the event for Toys For Tots. Nearly 200 guests poured into the event where the ceremony was also live streamed on You Tube. For breathing life back into a detachment that had been in quarantine, Marine Yakubsin's actions are recognized with this award and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the detachment and the Marine Corps League. | 2021 - JIM HUTTOJim Hutto, who served as a combat wounded FMF Corpsman, was selected as the 2021 Marine of the Year. Jim had previously served as the detachment's quartermaster and currently serves as the Adjutant/Paymaster. He has been an active part of all planning and all events, not just in his capacity as an officer but also as a volunteer lending a hand wherever it is needed. He donates his times, his talents and his resources to helping move the mission of the detachment forward. For the 2021 Birthday Ball, Jim's management skills developed during his career as a leader in the Chicago Postal System made him a valuable consultant to the Commandant and the Birthday Ball Committee. His dedication to the Marine Corps League and service to the community are in keeping with the highest traditions of the detachment and the Marine Corps League. |
